LAPD Officer Thrown 30 Feet After Getting Hit By Civilian Car in Sylmar

An LAPD officer was struck by a car and launched 30 feet early Tuesday morning in Sylmar, deputies said.

The accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. near El Cariso Community Regional Park where sheriff's deputies were looking for a robbery suspect.

Deputies requested help from LAPD to help set up a containment area, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

An LAPD sergeant assisting at the scene was struck by a civilian vehicle and transported to a hospital. The officer suffered head trauma as a result of the accident, according to the LAPD.

Authorities said the male driver was traveling home from work when he struck the officer.

The driver remained at the scene with authorities, and was sober and licensed to drive at the time of the accident, police said.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck visited the officer in the hospital, according a tweet he sent Tuesday morning.

"I just left the hospital after visiting with our injured Sgt. He's in great spirits, surrounded by friends & family on the road to recovery," Beck wrote.
