LAUSD Confirms Student's Meningitis Death

A 10-year-old LAUSD student has died after contracting meningitis, district officials confirmed Friday.

The boy attended 92nd Street Elementary School in Watts. A notification letter was sent to parents last Friday, according to LAUSD officials.

Classmates and teachers were screened after administrators were alerted to the case, school officials said. No additional cases have been reported, according to LAUSD officials.

Signs and symptoms of meningitis, an inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, include fever, headache, and stiff neck. It usually is caused by a viral or bacterial infection.
