Los Angeles World Airports is taking steps to make renting a car easier at Los Angeles International Airport.
LAWA made the first formal move Thursday in the procurement process for the design and construction of the Consolidated Rent-A-Car Center, a project that will consolidate more than 20 car rental offices in one location, with the release of a request for qualifications.
"The ConRAC is a big piece of the puzzle as we address the biggest issue at LAX, growing traffic congestion," LAWA CEO Deborah Flint. "This new facility will significantly improve the customer experience by relocating into one site more than two dozen car rental agencies currently scattered throughout neighboring communities."
The ConRAC -- part of the $5.5-billion Landside Access Modernization Program -- would be located near Interstate 405 in Manchester Square. It is expected to help relieve traffic congestion around LAX along with the proposed 2.25-mile Automated People Mover, which LAWA said would eliminate the need for rental car courtesy vehicles entering the Central Terminal Area and reduce the number of autos driving into the CTA by 3,200.
LAMP also includes two Intermodal Transportation Facilities and roadway improvements to enhance access to the airport.
"The ConRAC and roadway improvements will allow travelers to efficiently reach their rental car company and more quickly find their way to and from the I-405 and the region's freeway system," Flint said. "Also, rental car drivers unfamiliar with Los Angeles can more easily find their rental company when their return to LAX."
The deadline for companies to submit statements of qualifications is Feb. 21.
