Caltrans officials had one lane's worth of good news for early morning drivers on the Santa Ana (5) Freeway over the next few days, the state agency announced Sunday.
At least one lane in each direction will be kept open during late- night and predawn hours, in the massive construction project southeast of Los Angeles. All the other lanes will be blocked off.
But the good news is accompanied by warnings of heavy overnight traffic on the 5 Freeway widening project between the 605 and 91 freeways.
And a lane striping project will likely snarl traffic closer to Los Angeles this week as well.
Lanes will start to be closed by crews on the southbound 5 Freeway at Valley View Boulevard before midnight tonight and Monday night. By midnight, all but one lane will be closed as far as Artesia Boulevard.
Northbound 5 traffic will have only one lane from Artesia -- just past the 91 interchange -- up to Valley View.
The closures should be wrapped up by 5 a.m. Monday and Tuesday mornings. But depending on progress, the lane closures may also be in effect Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Concrete divider railings will be moved in that area, where the 65- year-old freeway is being completely elevated, rebuilt and doubled in size. Caltrans and Metro are investing $1.9 billion in that effort, from the 605 to the Orange County line.
A restriping project will also close lanes on the 5 Monday night. That project is between the 605 and Washington Boulevard, near the 710 Freeway.
Motorists were advised that the schedule is subject to change, and updates will be posted on the Caltrans District 7 Twitter feed, and on the web at the California Department of Transportation website.
