Las Vegas Hotel Reopens Pool One Day After Fire

A Las Vegas high-rise hotel has reopened its rooftop swimming pool a day after a fire sent patrons running and black smoke billowing above the Strip.

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas says the Bamboo Pool on the 14th floor reopened at 10 a.m. Sunday with full service except for its West Bar.

West Hills resident Matthew Mills shot cellphone video from his Cosmopolitan hotel room as the fire engulfed synthetic, plastic-like palm trees and cabanas.

"I was talking to one of the fire department people and he had mentioned that those were plastic and there's a lot of petroleum in those and sometimes those can go up fast," Mills said.

He said he has not received cash and valuables that he left in his room when he evacuated. He also said a Cosmopolitan senior manager said the hotel was not at fault.

Mills said he had seen cigarette burns on the cabanas a day before the fire.

"That's when it just hit me. Well, wait a minute. We saw all the cigarette burns. Is this from a cigarette burn?" he said.

Hotel officials said in a statement that an area affected by the fire has been walled off by the Clark County Fire Department.

A spa, fitness center and the 15th floor of the hotel's West End Tower are also open. However, guest rooms on the 14th floor are still closed.

Crews were called to the resort around 12:15 p.m. Saturday to reports of a fire by an outdoor pool.

Two people were treated for smoke inhalation.
