Gunman Shot During Standoff With Deputies in Lawndale

A gunman was shot during a standoff with sheriff's deputies in Lawndale Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the man had died, but later issued a correction, saying that the gunman remained hospitalized in unknown condition.

The man, identified as 23-year-old Travis Herr, is expected to be okay. Herr faces charges of attempted murder on a peace officer.

Residents were evacuated as sheriff’s deputies responded to a 23-year-old man who barricaded himself inside a home with a gun.

There were multiple reports the man had fired a rifle at deputies.

Deputies were called to the area of 164th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard around 1 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He was shot after he emerged from the house around 2:15 p.m.

He was treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital, where he was in stable condition.

It was not immediately known what led to the standoff.

Several area schools were placed on lockdown during the standoff.
