An 80-year-old man suffered burns on his face and arm in a fire at Leisure World in Laguna Woods.

The fire started about 1:40 a.m. at his apartment complex in the 2300 block of Via Mariposa West.

"The elderly resident was awoken by flames in his third-floor unit, and he got out on his own," said Capt. Marc Stone of the Orange County Fire Authority.

He was still on the third floor when firefighters arrived.

Several other units were evacuated due to heavy smoke. Some apartments suffered minor water damage. The Red Cross is helping those tenants find temporary housing.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to put out the fire, which was confined to the third-floor apartment.

The damage was estimated at $75,000.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
