Lemonade Stand Fundraiser Held to Help Families in US Detention Camps

Parents and children in Los Angeles will hold a lemonade stand fundraiser to offer support to families in U.S. detention camps and at the border.

The "Lemonade STAND for Justice" fundraiser will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Pan Pacific Park located at 7600 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036, near the playground and recreation center.

The event is organized by Kids 4 Freedom & Justice, an LA based children's group that is dedicated to creating opportunities for children of color between ages 8-12 "to learn and engage in practices of liberation, freedom and justice toward a better world."

This fundraiser is "part of a national effort by kids-based racial and social justice groups who are participating in various actions, fundraising and publishing a national letter calling to close U.S. detention camps as well as in coordination with the Lights for Liberty events happening around the country."

"We are taking a STAND against the Trump administration's incarceration of children. It is wrong, immoral and inhumane. As a parent it is heartbreaking to see children treated this way. It is up to everyday people to stand up and put an end to our government's inhumane policy," said Elizabeth Sunwoo, Kids 4 Freedom & Justice parent.

Aside from lemonade, there will be face painting and animal balloons for children and families to enjoy. Those participating can also send postcards to their representatives.

"It's wrong that kids like me or younger than me are being put in camps. Kids should be in summer camp, not detention camps. If I were them, I would be scared and sad and I want to do what I can to help them," said Naiya Kim, 12, member of Kids 4 Freedom and Justice.
