Woman Killed After Falling Off Queen Mary Identified

An autopsy has reportedly been scheduled for Thursday

The 26-year-old woman who died after falling 75 feet off the Queen Mary into frigid water has been identified as Kelly Ryann Dorrell.

An autopsy has been reportedly scheduled for Thursday, and a toxicology report will be done to confirm if alcohol played a role in the Long Beach woman’s death.

"We have evidence to support saying the victim was intoxicated," said Long Beach police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt.

Dorrell was apparently on a gangway, or ramp, that led from a shore-based elevator tower to an upper deck on the famed ship, which started its life as a luxury liner and later became a troop transport ship during World War II.

She then climbed over a guard rail before falling into the water about 8:30 p.m. Monday, according to witnesses.

A 40-year-old man who dove into the water after Dorrell is believed to be her boyfriend, Pratt said. He was hospitalized with minor injuries.

A ship employee also jumped in, said Pratt.

"When officers arrived, three people were in the water. One officer went in right away to assist. The boyfriend was unable to get out because he was suffering from hypothermia. A second officer went in to help him," Pratt told CNS.

A man who answered the door at Dorrell's apartment Wednesday night did not want to talk, but according to her profile on classmates.com, Dorrell was a graduate of Millikan High in Long Beach and UC Santa Barbara and was taking courses to get a teaching certificate.
