A report of a stolen vehicle in Redondo Beach ended with an officer-involved shooting Thursday morning in Long Beach.

Long Beach police opened fire on the subject after California Highway Patrol officers followed a stolen BMW from Redondo Beach at about 1 a.m. on the 405 Freeway to Long Beach.

The BMW's driver exited the 405 Freeway at Studebaker Road, losing pursuing CHP patrol cars. He then entered a residential area where the vehicle was spotted by Long Beach police, who followed the car.

The driver crashed into a garage in the 6400 block of Keynote Street near Hackett Avenue. The subject "displayed a handgun" after crashing the vehicle at a residence, according to Long Beach police.

He was pronounced dead at the scene after the officer-involved shooting. No officers were injured.

Redondo Beach police said the 2012 BMW had been reported stolen from a home in the city on Wednesday evening. Police said the thief had broken into the car owner's home and stolen the vehicle's keys.

Police in Redondo Beach put out an alert to surrounding public safety agencies that the car had been stolen. When the car was spotted by CHP officers on the 405 Freeway, the pursuit began.
