Hot Wheels Unveils Toy Tesla Model S

Today, the Hot Wheels garage in El Segundo opened for the first time, and revealed new product designs like a 1:64 scale model of the Tesla model S.

Filled with life-sized versions of every kids' classic dream car, the Hot Wheels real-life garage is anyone’s childhood fantasy.

The Hot Wheels garage in El Segundo opened for the first time Thursday, and revealed new product designs like a 1:64 scale model of one of Tesla's most iconic cars, the Model S.

Excited about the unveiling, Hot Wheels tweeted a picture of the event:

The toy car created by Tesla Motors and Mattel can be purchased for about a dollar at most stores where children's toys are sold.

Ryu Asada, Hot Wheels Project Designer, said it was challenging to design an electric car because it lacked an engine and exhaust pipe, amongst other things toy cars typically have.

“It’s cool because you play with them as a child, we all played with Hot Wheels, and then to say okay lets have a Tesla that’s a Hot Wheels, it’s a real honor,” said Javier Verdura Director of Product Design at Tesla Motors.

Aside from the Tesla Model S, several of the Team Hot Wheels’ designers' life sized creations were on site like Hot Wheels’ classic, “Bad to the Blade,” and “The Darth Car,” a custom Corvette shaped like Darth Vader’s mask.

For younger Hot Wheels fans, there were all kinds of Hot Wheels cars and tracks to play with on site.

Hot Wheels also showcased Speedometry, a new education program created to teach fourth graders things like potential and kinetic energy through hands-on activity.

The silver Hot Wheels Tesla Model S is expected to hit stores nationwide Thursday, and a red model will be released shortly. Speedometry’s free curriculum is available for download here.
