    Southern California firefighters are on watch, preparing for any possible problems with fires because of windy weather. At the Ventura pier, the gusting winds didn't stray away any visitors. Lolita Lopez reports from Valencia for the NBC4 News at 5 and 6 p.m. on January 2, 2013.

    Severe weather alerts were in effect for much of the Southland on Wednesday as high winds reached 70 mph in some areas.

    High-wind warnings were issued for Los Angeles County mountains excluding the Santa Monica range through 2 p.m. Thursday. Less-severe wind advisories were issued for much of SoCal.

    "Santa Ana winds gusting below the passes and canyons. We've got high pressure building in over the Great Basin. It's going to hang in there for about another day or so before the winds begin subsiding," said NBC4 weathercaster Carl Bell.

    Here's a look at today's weather forecast.

    The National Weather Service warned drivers to be careful on the roadways: "Gusty cross winds can create hazardous driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles. Winds this strong can down power lines and tree branches."

    The NWS recorded gusts Wednesday morning of 70 mph at Camp Nine in the San Gabriels, 67 mph at Chilao, which is also in the San Gabriels, 66 mph in the Malibu Hills and 37 mph in Saugus.
