NBA legends Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, whose relationship is the focus of a new Broadway play “Magic, Bird,” appeared Wednesday on "Late Night with David Letterman” to talk about their lifelong friendship and intense basketball rivalry.

Bird said the documentary does a great job capturing the relationship between the former Laker and the former Celtics stars, but “it was really all about the competition.”

“Even today, if we could do something to compete against each other, I’d still like to do that,” Bird said to laughs and applause.

Johnson said he feels the same way.

“I wish we could compete against each other right now,” Johnson said.

Letterman joked, “you could go out and buy a baseball team right now.”

Bird joked that he considered buying the St. Louis Cardinals, but because the Dodgers’ deal was record breaking over $2 billion, Bird figured the team was worth at least $500 billion.
