Aftershock Rumbles Through Westlake Village

A magnitude-4.4 earthquake hits near Westlake Village.

 At about 10:34 p.m. Friday there was a 3.1 aftershock near Westlake Village.

Earlier Friday evening a magnitude-4.4 earthquake was reported near Westlake Village. The small city of 8,400 people is located at the western edge of Los Angeles County,

The first quake, which hit at 6:11 p.m., had a depth of 5.6. miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There were no reports of damage.

The epicenter (map) was located 6 miles southwest of Westlake Village, 7 miles south of Thousand Oaks and 7 miles west-northwest of Malibu.

Caltech Seismologist Dr. Egill Hauksson said " the earthquake did not occur on a fault that we know."

Westlake Village resident 14-year-old Michelle Noyes was the first person to call the NBC4 assignment desk after the 6:11 p.m. seismic disturbance.   She said "it felt like wind was shaking the house back and forth. It felt like it lasted 7 seconds, maybe more." Michelle was sitting on a bed watching television when the shaker hit.

People living in West Los Angeles, Sherman Oaks, Marina del Rey, Camarillo, Carson and Long Beach called The Channel 4 News  to report they felt the 6:11 p.m. quake. Did you feel it? Post your comments below.
