Man Accused of Killing Dog With Machete During Failed Home Burglary

Police said the convicted felon struck the dog several times with the machete

A parolee suspected of killing a dog with a machete while burglarizing a Riverside home was being held without bail Tuesday.

Armando Medina, 23, was arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside on suspicion of animal cruelty, burglary, attempted auto theft, resisting arrest and parole violations.

Medina allegedly kicked in the back door to a residence in the 10300 block of Wagner Way, near Hole Avenue, about 2:30 p.m. Sunday and grabbed several items, then proceeded into the backyard. The suspect was armed with a machete and used it to strike the victims' dog several times, inflicting fatal injuries, police allege.

Moments later, Medina made his way into the street fronting the house and allegedly tried to steal the residents' car, but he was quickly surrounded by members of the household, who corralled him and called 911, according to Riverside police Officer Ryan Railsback.

Officers arrived within a couple of minutes and forcibly took the convicted felon into custody. No one was injured.

Jail records show Medina has been convicted of felonies within the last five years, but details about the offenses were unavailable.
