Man Allegedly Attempts to Steal Transit Authority Bus With Passengers in Palmdale

A man was arrested after he allegedly tried to steal a Transit Authority bus while passengers were on board, authorities said.

Richard Martin, 43, was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after deputies received a report about a man attempting to take off with the bus, according to a news release from the Palmdale Station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department

Officers arrived at Palmdale Avenue and 90th Street around 3:11 p.m. where they found the bus driver who pointed deputies to a man in the driver's seat, according to the new release.

Deputies detained Martin and learned he was a passenger on the bus. When the driver left his seat, Martin ran to the front and took the driver's place. Martin then attempted to drive the bus away and yelled to the passengers on board that he was going to take the bus with them on board, according to the new release.

The Transit Authority bus driver was able to electronically disable the vehicle, preventing Martin from driving off, according to the news release.

Martin told deputies he was trying to steal the bus to visit his family, according to the news release.

Martin was arrested for attempted kidnapping and auto theft charges, according to the news release.

None of the passengers were injured, according to the news release.

It was unclear if Martin had an attorney.
