Man Allegedly Shoots at Police Officer During Foot Pursuit

A man was arrested Monday for allegedly shooting at police officers who were trying to detain him, culminating in an hours-long standoff at a Riverside home where he attempted to hide.

Fidel Junior Corona, 20, was booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer and use of a firearm during a felony. He's being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

According to Riverside police Officer Ryan Railsback, officers came into contact with Corona at about 9 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Seventh Street. The suspect, who was wanted on a misdemeanor warrant, took off running when the officers approached, Railsback said.

He said that as Corona was trying to elude the officers, he allegedly pulled a handgun and fired a single shot in their direction. They weren't hit.

Officers lost sight of the suspect near the intersection of Kansas Avenue and Loma Vista Street, according to Railsback.

"While a yard-to-yard search was being conducted, a resident in the 2000 block of West Linden Street reported a subject had entered their home and said the police were chasing him and he needed to hide,'' Railsback said.

"This residence was surrounded, and officers confirmed the suspect who shot at them was inside.''

A SWAT unit was summoned to the location, as well as detectives, who made multiple announcements encouraging Corona to surrender, without a response.

According to Railsback, a search warrant was obtained, and officers forced their way into the residence shortly after 3 a.m. today. A police dog flushed Corona out of his hiding place and located a pistol nearby, Railsback said.

No officers or civilians were injured during the chase and ensuing standoff.

According to court records, Corona has a felony case pending in Riverside County Superior Court for alleged auto theft, as well as a misdemeanor case for alleged driving without a license. He allegedly failed to appear at a recent hearing scheduled in the latter matter, records showed.
