Man Arrested, Accused of Firing at Deputies on Freeway

A man who allegedly fired shots at sheriffs deputies on the Pomona (60) Freeway in Industry was in custody today, facing possible charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.

The man was alleged to have fired at deputies in a Los Angeles County sheriff's vehicle as both traveled westbound on the Pomona Freeway about 10:25 p.m. Wednesday, before speeding away, according to Sgt. N. Gutierrez of the sheriff's Industry station, who said the man had not been booked.

Gutierrez said the suspect's vehicle, a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, was believed to have been in front of the sheriff's vehicle when the shots were fired.

It was not known how many shots were fired, or if the vehicle was struck, Gutierrez said.

The suspect's vehicle was stopped by California Highway Patrol officers in a transition lane from the southbound San Gabriel (605) Freeway to the Artesia (91) Freeway shortly after the shooting, she said.

All westbound lanes of the Pomona Freeway were shut down between Nogales Street and Azusa Avenue after the shooting as the investigation continued.
