Man Arrested After Stepchildren Left in Hot Car at Walmart

A man was arrested for allegedly leaving his 9-year-old and infant stepchildren in a hot car while he went inside a San Bernardino Walmart on Sunday, police said.

Officers responding to a 911 call placed by a Walmart manager arrived to the store parking lot at 2045 E. Highland Avenue, where they found the boy and his 1-year-old sibling sitting in the car, said Lt. Rich Lawhead of the San Bernardino Police Department.

Officers said the temperature inside the car had reached 95 degrees. The 9-year-old appeared to be disoriented and the baby was sweaty, Lawhead said.

The siblings were taken to the hospital. They were expected to be OK.

Their stepfather, who was inside the store with an 8-year-old girl who was also in his care, was arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment, Lawhead said.

The children were placed in the custody of child protect services.
