Ontario Fatal Shooting Victim, Suspect ‘Go Way Back'

Javier Alex Frias, arrested in the fatal shooting of an Ontario father, is a long-time friend of the victim, a family member says

A 37-year-old man described by the victim's family and a close friend was arrested Thursday in the fatal shooting of a father of six in Ontario.

Javier Alex Frias, 37, was arrested in connection with the shooting death of Angel Antonio Hernandez,  according to a news release from Ontario police. Authorities were alerted to a man hiding in a chicken coop in the 200 block of E. Phillips Street, where they arrested Frias, who is on parole.

Officers ordered Frias to come out but he refused, police said. A police K-9 was deployed and Frias was taken into custody, according to a news release. Police said the Frias, who had a loaded firearm, suffered bites to his arm.

Karla Hernandez, sister of the victim, described family members as shocked and distraught. She also called the suspect a family friend who grew up with her brother.

"The question I would have is, 'Why? What happened? You guys went back so long,'" said Karla Hernandez. "I don't understand what would have caused him to be something like that. That was his brother -- that was like his brother.

"I was in shock because that's a family friend I remember ever since I was little."

Karla Hernandez said she was not aware of a dispute involving the two men. She said it had been "a while" since she last saw her brother.

Hernandez was fatally shot while driving near the intersection of G Street and Vineyard Avenue.
His baby daughter and 4-year-old son were in the car, police said.

The children were not injured, police said.

Surveillance video showed a car pull up to a Toyota sedan being driven by Hernandez near G Street and Vineyard Avenue. The Toyota could be seen crashing into a truck in front of it shortly after the suspected vehicle drove away.

Investigators said Frias knew Hernandez, but a motive for the shooting was not immediately determined.
