Wallets and cellphones swiped from the cars were then used at ATMs and stores including Target, Best Buy and Macy's, police said.

A Southern California man was arrested Thursday for allegedly stealing wallets and cellphones from unsuspecting surfers in Manhattan Beach while they were in the ocean, police said.

The man is accused of entering cars belonging to several surfers with keys that were hidden outside their vehicles, according to the Manhattan Beach Police Department.

Cellphones and wallets were swiped from the cars, and the stolen credit cards were used at ATMs and stores including Target, Best Buy and Macy's, police said.

Jordan Adams, 21, of Hawthorne, was arrested Thursday on an outstanding warrant for a dozen felony counts of ID theft and possessing credit card numbers, and he was being held in lieu of $300,000 bail, police said.

The thefts were reported between Nov. 30, 2014, and March 21 of this year, and police said the total loss was over $150,000 in addition to more than $40,000 in declined charges.

It was not clear whether Adams obtained an attorney.
