Man Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assaults Since 1970s

Authorities think there are more victims of suspect Daniel Montoya, 55, and encourage them to come forward

Police in Long Beach have arrested a man they believe sexually assaulted several teenage boys starting in the 1970s, authorities said Thursday.

Daniel Montoya, 55, was arrested on Oct. 6 in Phoenix, Arizona in connection with assaults he allegedly committed while a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Long Beach, according to a news release from the Long Beach Police Department.

Detectives from Long Beach worked with Phoenix police.

Montoya pleaded guilty in 1986 to molesting two boys. He received three years probation, was ordered to attend psychotherapy treatment and was required to register as a sex offender, police said.

The latest victims were initially embarrassed by the incidents and did not report them, but recently felt compelled to report when Montoya called and asked about one victim's 8-year-old child.

Police said they started investigating Montoya in April. Authorities think there are more victims, and encourage them to come forward.

Montoya is in jail with bail set at $1.25 million.
