Man Arrested in Pacoima Hit and Run

the 21-year-old is accused of killing an 82-year-old woman who was trying to cross a street in Pacoima

A 21-year-old man was behind bars today in the hit-and- run death of an 82-year-old woman crossing a Pacoima street, police said.

Eduardo Garcia was arrested about 2 a.m. at his Canoga Park home, about six hours after allegedly striking Herlinda Carrillo on Van Nuys Boulevard near El Dorado Avenue, Los Angeles police Officer James Norton of the Valley Traffic Division said.

Carrillo was not in a crosswalk when Garcia's 2000 Toyota Tundra pickup struck her on Van Nuys Boulevard about 7:50 p.m. Saturday, Norton said.

Paramedics were unable to save Carrillo, he said.

A witness gave police Garcia's license plate number, and he was arrested at his Canoga Park home and booked him on suspicion of suspicion of felony hit and run, Norton said. Bail was set at $50,000.

Had Garcia stopped, he might not have been held responsible for the woman's death, Norton said, noting that Carrillo was not in a crosswalk.
