Man Arrested After Fullerton Hostage Standoff

A suspect who may have been involved in a no-hit, gang-related shooting in a park in Placentia Thursday surrendered after holding a hostage inside a garage in Fullerton for more than three hours, police said.

Officers were dispatched at 5 p.m. to Kraemer Memorial Park near the 200 block of Bradford Avenue in Placentia to investigate a reports of shots fired, according to Placentia police Lt. Brad Butts.

No victims were found, but witnesses said three men were seen leaving the area in a black Toyota, Butts said. The vehicle was located unoccupied in Fullerton in the area of Bradford and Yorba Linda Boulevard, Butts said.

Someone in the area flagged down an officer and said a family member was being held inside a garage by a man who was possibly armed, Butts said.

"The suspect grabbed a man and took him hostage and used him and his garage to shield himself from police," Butts said.

A North County SWAT team was called in and surrounded the garage, and the suspect surrendered about 8:15 p.m. and was taken into custody, Butts said.

It was not immediately confirmed if the suspect was involved in the earlier shooting. However, Butts said it appeared the shooting was gang-related.

The suspect was being interviewed by detectives and will be booked overnight, Butts said.
