Man Accused of Biting, Trying to Strangle Elderly Man Walking Home from Gym

Police said there was "no apparent reason" for the attack

An Inland Empire man is accused of brutally assaulting an 80-year-old man who was walking home from the gym, police said Tuesday.

Jonathon Paul Silva, 20, was arrested last week on suspicion of attempted murder and assault, according to the Fontana Police Department.

Silva allegedly approached the elderly victim, who was walking home from the gym near Sierra and Walnut avenues on Aug. 14, police said.

Silva is accused of punching the man in the face, knocking him to the ground, trying to strangle him and biting him on the stomach about 10 times while he was on the ground, Fontana police said.

Police said there was "no apparent reason" for the attack.

The victim suffered "major swelling to the face," a cut over his eye, a broken nose and bite marks on his stomach, police said.

Officials asked anyone with information to contact Fontana police at 909-456-TIPS or www.wetip.com.
