Man Drinking on Tracks Killed By Freight Train Near Palmdale

The coroner's office has identified the man as 20-year-old Edgardo Mendez-Barreras. He was drinking on a railroad trestle when a freight train came along.

A Palmdale man who had been drinking with friends on a railroad trestle was killed when a freight train came roaring along, police said Monday.

Twenty-year-old Edgardo Mendez-Barreras died instantly when he was struck by a train Saturday night, Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the Los Angeles County coroner's office told NBC Los Angeles.

Mendez-Barreras was one of three men drinking on the tracks on a Union Pacific bridge over Little Rock Creek about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. His two companions managed to outrun the train, but he didn't make it.

"There were three of them," Los Angeles Sheriff Deputy D. Young said. "Two got off and one of them didn't or couldn't, and he got hit by the train."
