Man Found Dead in Burned-Out Car Identified

Russell Rathert was found in the trunk of a vehicle found in flames on Radford Avenue under the Ventura (101) Freeway about 3 a.m.September 2, 2010, Los Angeles police said.
The man whose body was found Aug. 31 in the trunk of a burned-out car in Valley Village was identified as a 50-year-old Van Nuys man whose death was not caused by the fire, police said Wednesday.
Russell Rathert was found in the trunk of a vehicle found in flames on Radford Avenue under the Ventura (101) Freeway about 3 a.m. that Tuesday, Los Angeles police said.
Police said the cause of death has not been established, pending toxicology tests, but that unspecified evidence showed Rathert was dead before the car went up in flames.
