A man was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds to the head just after midnight Wednesday, police said.

The incident occurred in the 6800 block of North Figueroa Street in Highland Park. Investigators say the man was hit by bullet fragments while standing outside his house.

The bullet fragments were most likely from someone firing a gun into the sky around midnight, police said.

The man's injuries were not life-threating and he was expected to be released from the hospital later today.
