One man died and a woman was injured when a fast-moving fire erupted in the couple's North Hollywood home Wednesday evening.

The fire was reported in the 6900 block of Agnes Avenue (map) at 8:13 p.m., according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

A woman who lived at the home told firefighters she heard a smoke alarm while she was in the back of the house. She then ran into her living room, where her husband was overcome by flames, Humphrey said.

The woman escaped through a back door of the home. The property was estimated to be 87 years old.

At least 44 firefighters knocked down the blaze within 15 minutes. While cleaning up hot spots, firefighters found human remains believed to be that of the woman's 79-year-old husband, officials said.

The woman, whose age was not released, was taken to a hospital for smoke exposure.

No other injuries were reported.
