Armed Man Shot, Killed by Police in Westlake District

A man with a gun was shot and killed by Los Angeles police Wednesday night in the Westlake district, authorities said.

Los Angeles Police Department Officer Sal Ramirez said an officer requested backup for a man with a gun at 7:08 p.m. in the area of Third and Witmer streets.

When attempts to de-escalate the situation, including verbal and less lethal use of force, failed, officers fired at the man, killing him at the scene, police said.

Police did not say what specifically led to the shooting, but bystanders at the scene said the man was holding the gun to his head. Police would only confirm he had a weapon.

The man was in his 40's, police said. Genesis Hernandez, who said she was a friend of the man, told NBC4 he was also a son, a brother and a father.

A gun was recovered at the scene, police said.
