An 81-year-old driver stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake and ran over a 74-year-old man in a Santa Clarita crosswalk Monday, sheriff’s deputies said.
"I saw the man under the car," Dick Ramirez, a witness, said.
The car, which was moving about 5 mph, pinned the victim underneath in the 25800 block of McBean Parkway about 9:13 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The man was freed and taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where deputies say he was pronounced dead about an hour after the crash.
Sheriff’s officials said the female driver was not detained and an investigation was underway.
Police told NBC4 that the driver did not previously have driving issues.
