Man Sentenced in Pregnant Girlfriend's Murder

Maria Gonzalez was 14 weeks pregnant and found buried in the backyard.

A man convicted of strangling and killing his pregnant 18-year-old girlfriend and unborn son was sentenced Monday to 30 years to life in prison, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Devion Keith Anderson, 24, was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder on Feb. 20 for the December 2013 killing of Maria Gonzalez and their unborn son.

Deputy District Attorney Adrian Roxas said a family member at Anderson's home in Compton reported that he may have killed and buried Gonzalez, who was 14 weeks pregnant.

Deputies found freshly dug dirt in the backyard, and found Gonzalez's body after excavating the area. An autopsy performed later determined she was killed by strangulation.

Anderson confessed to the murder at the Compton sheriff's station a few hours after the discovery.

Additional details about the killing were not immediately clear.

The California Department of Corrections will ultimately determine when Anderson will be up for parole, the DA's office said.
