Man Shot in Stomach After Brandishing Gun at Cops: LAPD

He was shot in the gut by one of the lawmen in the area of West 6th and South Coronado streets

A man was gunned down after he allegedly pointed a gun at police officers in Westlake late Tuesday.

He was shot in the stomach by one of the lawmen in the area of West 6th and South Coronado streets at around 10 p.m., a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said. After being hit, he was taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition.

The shooting happened after the officers were flagged down by a pair of men who claimed two men brandished a handgun at them.

When the officers saw the two subjects of the report, the men tried to walk away, according to authorities. One then allegedly pointed a gun at the officers, which is when the shooting occurred. The other subject was not hit, and was taken into custody.

A firearm was recovered underneath a vehicle at the scene.

Investigators separated the officers so they could be questioned independently on the shooting. They were not wearing body cameras.

The 600 block of Coronado Street at West 6th Street has been closed off while the investigation takes place.
