Cyclist Shot to Death in Commerce

He was gunned down at the intersection of Eastern Avenue and 61st Street

A cyclist initially believed to have died in a hit-and-run crash was found to have actually been shot to death in Commerce early Tuesday.

He was gunned down as he rode his bike at the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Peachtree Street just before 3 a.m, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman said.

“It appears he was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk when the incident occurred and investigators are out here trying to find any witnesses or surveillance video that might help us,” Lt. Holly Francisco said, with the LASD.

The victim, who was in his 30s, was found by the sidewalk.

The circumstances that led up to the shooting were unknown. The busy stretch of street remained closed for hours, as detectives canvassed the area, looking for clues and surveillance video that could shed more light on the shooting.

Eastern Avenue, near 61st Street in Commerce was reopened at 10:30 a.m. and traffic was flowing through the area again.
