Man Shot and Killed by Santa Ana PD's Gang Unit

A man was shot and killed Sunday by officers from Santa Ana's gang unit on a street in Santa Ana, according to a police spokesman.

The shooting took place about 5 p.m. in the 400 block of South Birch Street, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

According to Bertagna, the gang detectives were patrolling that area, which has seen a rise in gang activity, which included a lot of shootings.

"They came across a car," Bertagna said. "I don't know if it was parked on the street or in an alley there at Birch Street. But one man got out of the car and began to run from the scene."

The detectives, Bertagna said, gave chase through several buildings and then became involved in an officer-involved-shooting on Birch Street.

The man they were chasing died at the scene, Bertagna continued. His name was being withheld until his family could be notified.

Bertagna said he didn't yet know what precipitated the shooting, whether the person who was killed fired a weapon or whether a gun was recovered at the scene.

Detectives, he added, were at the scene conducting their death investigation.

"They are there now, looking for witnesses and for video," Bertagna said.

Anyone with information on the deadly shooting was asked to call the Santa Ana police at 714-245-8665.
