Man Shot by Police in Echo Park

A man was shot an unknown number of times by police in an officer-involved shooting Sunday in Echo Park.

Details are still sketchy, but officers happened upon a fight in the street near a gas station about 1 a.m, in the area of Portia Street and Sunset Boulevard, shortly before the officer-involved shooting, according to Lt. Ryan Schatz of the LAPD's Northeast station.

"There was a crime in progress and from that is when the officer-involved shooting occurred. The officers were at the right place, at the right time," said Schatz, adding that no officers were injured.

One man involved in the altercation bolted after pulling a gun on the officers, which resulted in the police shooting, according to media reports.

The man was transported to an area hospital in stable condition, Schatz said.
