Suspected Arsonist Pleads Not Guilty in Grass Fires

Suspect allegedly started several trash can and brush fires in LA urban areas

A 43-year-old man pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to charges that he ignited trash and grass fires in Los Angeles, police said.

Salvador Munguia is charged with 21 counts of arson for allegedly setting fire to piles of leaves and discarded furniture from April to June, according to a press release from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

No major damage was reported.

This case falls during California’s driest year on record, and state fire officials recently cautioned of the susceptibility of large areas of dry grass to ignition.

Munguia is scheduled to reappear in court again on July 14.

No major damage was caused by the fires Munguia is accused of setting, police said.
