Man Turns Gun on Self After Possible “Accidental” Discharge Kills Another

A man attempting to disarm a man who pulled out a handgun was fatally shot before the gunman turned the weapon on himself early Sunday in Willowbrook.

The men knew each other and the shootings did not appear to stem from an argument, according to Lt. Eddie Hernandez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

"It sounds like it could have been an accidental discharge," Hernandez said. "The shooting of the individual himself could have been deliberate."

Authorities responded around 1 a.m. to reports of gunshot victims in the 400 block of East 138th Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Witnesses told investigators that two men involved in the shooting were “hanging out” with others in front of a house.

When one man pulled out a handgun, another man who lived at the house attempted to disarm him, officials said. During the struggle, the man trying to disarm the gunman was shot in the upper torso. About 30 seconds later, the other man turned the gun on himself, officials said.

Investigators said the gunman was pronounced dead at the scene. The other man was taken to a hospital where he later died.

No one else in the group was injured, officials said.
