Five people were injured Thursday evening after a car went careening down Manhattan Beach Boulevard, crashed into two other cars and rammed through concrete posts before coming to a stop halfway down the Manhattan Beach Pier, police said.
A white Cadillac being driven by an elderly man apparently had a mechanical problem when it started to veer out of control at about 6:20 p.m. near Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Morningside Drive.
Police received reports of a hit and run near Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Morningside Drive. The driver continued westbound on Manhattan Beach Boulevard, hitting two other cars and two separate intersections while en route to the pier, said Lt. Christian Eichenlaub.
The Cadillac then rolled down the hill and took out three concrete posts before stopping half way down the pier, Eichenlaub said, adding that an initial investigation suggests the car’s brakes had failed, setting off the chain of events.
Five people were injured and four of them were taken to the hospital. All victims suffered minor injuries, Eichenlaub said.
The driver was given a sobriety test on scene. Eichenlaub said there was no indication the driver was intoxicated.
It was not known if the driver had been cited.
