Police Search for Gunman Who Shot Councilman's Brothers

As police continued to search for the killer of the brother of a Compton City Councilman on Tuesday in a suspected gang shooting, a community mourned the loss of the father of three children whose family said made mistakes but was not in a gang.

Larry Galvan, the 27-year-old brother of Councilman Isaac Galvan, was fatally shot Monday in a walk-up attack in the 900 block of South La Verne Avenue in East Los Angeles, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Mike Barraza. A second brother, Dennis, was wounded in the attack.

"I lost Larry," said Esther Galvan, their mother. "I lost Larry and I don't know what to do. My grandson loves his daddy so much."

Larry Galvan was shot multiple times in the chest and died of cardiac arrest, Isaac Galvan said.

The Compton City Council held a moment of silence before its Tuesday meeting, which Isaac Galvan did not attend so he could mourn with his family.

"I believe that in his last moments he was able to call God and I do believe he's in heaven," Isaac Galvan said. "My little brother's life will not be in vain. He leaves behind three brothers, a mother, many friends and three beautiful children who through their lives, his memory will live on."

The brothers were walking south on La Verne Avenue when a man walked up, pulled out a gun and shot them, Barraza said.

The gunman took off in an SUV headed north on La Verne Avenue.

Isaac said his younger brother made mistakes but had turned his life around.

"I want to forgive the shooters right away," he said. "I need a little more prayer in order to do that but I believe at the end, when this is all said and done, not only am I going to forgive them but my mother is going to forgive them. My family is going to forgive them."
