Missing Children Found Safe

Ashley Montes and Timothy Jacob Reed had planned on running away, a friend told police

A 14-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl in who went missing together the Venice area over the weekend both showed up safe at the girl's home Monday night.

Ashley Montes, 12, and Timothy Jacob Reed, 14, had been missing since Saturday.

A friend told police the pair had been planning to run away for some time, while her sister told NBC4 her mother had been trying to get the pair to separate.

"My mom told her to break up with him, but she didn't want to listen," said Megan Montes, Ashley's sister. "She wanted to be with him."

Ashley Montes was embraced by her family when she showed up, with a towel in hand. Both children were interviewed by detectives Monday night.

Police originally thought they boarded a bus bound for the beach on Saturday. But that was based on incorrect information, officers with the Los Angeles Police Department said.

It was their friend, who was not missing, who got on the bus, police said. That friend said the two missing children walked away from the bus stop, which is near Mark Twain Middle School.
