A 13-year-old girl was found Sunday in Los Angeles exactly one week after she was last seen in Imperial County, according to the FBI.
Kaelynne Paez, a teen from Heber, Calif., just north of the Mexican border, has been reunited with her family and an investigation is under way into her weeklong disappearance, said Special Agent Darrell Foxworth.
An FBI investigation – which included "lots of interviews, background interviews and computer analysis," Foxworth said – led agents Sunday to an LA residence where they discovered the 13-year-old girl.
"When you have someone that age that goes missing and based on reports we received and the previous investigation conducted by the sheriff’s department, it’s prudent for us to continue on with the investigation," Foxworth said.
No arrests have been made and authorities were tight-lipped as to whether any persons of interest have been found, citing an ongoing investigation which started with the Imperial County Sheriff’s Department before the FBI stepped in on the third day.
Before Sunday, Paez was last seen on the morning of Sept. 9 near Heber Avenue in Imperial County.
"Her family hasn't had any contact with her, so there is a lot of concern with her well-being, where she may be who she may be with," Foxworth told NBC Wednesday night.
At the time, Foxworth would not go into details but said Paez may have met someone online.
Several online profiles on adult dating websites appear to have been created by Paez. One profile featuring a photo that resembles the teen claims she’s 19 years old and is interested in meeting men between the ages of 18 and 25.
Investigators would not say with whom Paez was found or their relationship to the girl.
