Investigators continued to search Wednesday for a 31-year-old woman who was kidnapped in Monrovia as a video surfaced that appears to show the man suspected in her disappearance at a bar hours before he was arrested Tuesday morning in a downtown Los Angeles SWAT standoff.
The search for Amanda Kathleen Custer began Monday morning after the Monrovia Police Department responded to a domestic violence report around 8:15 a.m. in the 600 block of Vaquero Road and found evidence of an apparent assault, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
The suspect's mother reported seeing 27-year-old Robert Anthony Camou put her daughter in the rear hatch of his Toyota Prius before driving off.
Custer's mother told NBCLA Wednesday morning that she is distraught. She also said she is aware of videos that appear to show Camou at an open mic event later that day performing an expletive-laced rap that includes the phrase, "I killed my b---- and buried that b---- in the... dirt."
The Los Angeles Times reported that investigators are reviewing the videos.
The man who recorded the video told NBCLA he did not initially recognize the man who appeared at the downtown LA bar. A friend later recognized him as the man arrested in the downtown LA standoff, he said. Michael Moore said the man asked him where he was posting the freestyle rap videos and did not seem bothered when he told him "everywhere."
After the rap, the man walked back into the crowd, which appeared stunned, and spent about 25 minutes at the bar, Moore said.
The focus of the investigation turned to downtown Los Angeles overnight Tuesday when police found the suspect inside a Toyota Prius that had been sought in connection with the crime. After an hourslong SWAT standoff, Camou finally surrendered at about 7:45 a.m. when officers shattered the rear window and tossed canisters of tear gas inside the car.
No one else was in the Prius.
Camou was arrested on an outstanding domestic violence warrant. In court Wednesday, he wore a protective vest and sat quietly during the hearing. A judge denied a media request to film the proceeding, and the hearing was subsequently postponed until Sept. 4.
He has not been charged in connection with the kidnapping.
Camou and Custer were in a dating relationship for about two years and police had been called to Camou's home numerous times in the past because of domestic incidents involving the two, according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, which reported that Custer does not live at the house.
