Witnesses Stop Driver After He Fatally Strikes Bicyclist

Witnesses grabbed a driver who had crashed into a bicyclist -- killing the man -- and then some parked cars in Montebello, California Highway Patrol officers said Sunday.

The bicyclist, a 35-year-old resident of Los Angeles, had been riding his bicycle south on Concourse Avenue past Allston Street. CHP officers were dispatchedat 7:31 p.m. Saturday.

The found the bicyclist had been rear ended by a 2002 Ford Expedition, the CHP reported. The man was ejected from his bike and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motoris sped away, but crashed into several parked vehicles a few blocks away. John F. Salvidar, 35, of Montebello, was detained by some local residents until the CHP arrived at the scene and arrested him.

No alcohol or drugs were determined to be a factor in the crash, the CHP reported.

The CHP's East Los Angeles area office asked anyone who saw the crash to call them at (323) 980-4600.
