Nearly 5,000 LADWP Customers Remain Without Power

Nearly 5,000 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers were still without power Sunday evening, two days after the Southland was lashed with wind and rain.

About 700 Southern California Edison customers in Los Angeles and Orange counties were without electricity, as well.

At the peak of Friday's storm, more than 82,000 DWP customers were without power.

By 2 p.m. the number had been whittled down to about 10,283 customers. The outage areas included boyle Heights, Glassell Park, Silver Lake, Koreatown, Harvard Heights, East Hollywood, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Lake Balboa, Palms and Sun Valley.

And by 10 p.m., 4,800 customers remained without power. Neighborhoods affected included Eagle Rock, Watts, Palms, Westchester, Pacific Palisades, Baldwin Hills, Encino, Lake Balboa, Canoga Park, Winnetka and Sherman Oaks.

Restoration for most customers is expected to take between 12 and 24 hours. Lingering showers and thunderstorms in the area could slow progress.

The most frequent causes of power outages during heavy rainstorms are downed trees, dried palm fronds, and branches from trees on both private and public property falling and making contact with power lines.

The department added crews in advance of the latest storm systems.

Anyone seeing a downed wire should always assume it is live, refrain from touching it and immediately call 911.

Southern California Edison reported about 1,150 customers without power in Los Angeles and Orange counties, including Monrovia, Paramount, Costa Mesa and Lake Forest, according to its website.

Crews were expected to work throughout the night.
