Mother Accused of Pushing Baby From Building Faces Arraignment

The child remains hospitalized after he was allegedly pushed from a parking structure Monday

The woman accused of pushing her child from a parking structure was charged Wednesday with one count of attempted murder and one felony count of child abuse causing great bodily injury.

Sonia Hermosillo, 31, is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday. Her 7-month-old son remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The child was pushed from a parking structure -- possibly from the fourth floor -- Monday evening at Children's Hospital-Orange County, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

"We don't think this was an accident,'' Orange police Sgt. Dan Adams said.

The child suffered medical conditions that required regular treatment at CHOC. Hermosillo drove her son to the fourth floor of the facility's parking structure Monday, but he was not scheduled for an appointment, according to the DA's office.

The mother removed the child's protective helmet, which was required for his medical condition, and pushed the baby from the structure, according to the DA.

Hermosillo walked into the hospital, validated her parking, then left the parking structure, according to prosecutors.

A witness who saw the child fall called Orange police. The child was transported to the trauma center at UC-Irvine.

Hermosillo's husband contacted La Habra police Monday to report that his son and wife were missing. La Habra officers contacted Orange police, who were studying surveillance video from the parking structure.

The video showed the license plate of a tan 2000 Chevrolet Blazer, which matched the description of the vehicle Hermosillo was driving. An Orange officer saw the vehicle late Monday near Children's Hospital.

An empty child seat was found in the vehicle.

Hermosillo, who has two other children, was arrested. She was undergoing a psychiatric evaluation, according to authorities.

If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of seven years to life in state prison.
