SoCal Roadways Closed by Mud and Floods, Snarling Commute

Friday morning brought much-needed rain and much-dreaded road closures during the morning commute as as rain, mud and high wind descended upon Southern California.

A stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway closed due to a mudslide in Ventura County, one of several freeway closures reported during a powerful storm that swept into Southern California Friday morning.

The California Highway Patrol closed PCH between Las Posas Road and Yerba Buena Road, due to 18 inches of mud on the roadway.

Severe flooding shut down the northbound 170 Freeway in North Hollywood, just north of the 101 interchange, the CHP said. The entire freeway was covered in a thick pool of water.

Part of the 710 Freeway in Long Beach was briefly shut down due to flooding near PCH, but work crews cleared the drains.

Emergency management officials caution that drivers should never drive through a flooded street.

Train travelers were also affected by the storm.

Amtrak suspended Pacific Surfliner service between San Luis Obispo and Los Angeles due to severe weather conditions.

A downed tree on the Gold Line in Pasadena caused "major delays," on the train line near the Del Mar station, according to Metro Los Angeles's twitter feed. East- and westbound trains were running on the same track between Del Mar and Lake.
