Smoke Monster Swirls Over El Segundo
So that's what that smoke was all about...

That column of smoke coming from the LAX area Tuesday morning is a planned burnoff at the El Segundo refinery.
The burnoff sent a plume of smoke -- not unlike the smoke monster from LOST -- over the area. The smoke tarnished an otherwise clear morning sky.
The refinery is just south of LAX. One NBCLA.com visitor could see the smoke from Century City, about 15 miles north of the refinery.
