NBC4 News Truck Catches Fire on 405 Freeway

Traffic was backed up Friday in the Sepulveda Pass after a NBC4 News truck caught fire on the 405 Freeway.

NBC photographer Joel Cooke, who was the only person in the vehicle, was traveling northbound on the 405 Freeway near the Getty Center when the truck caught fire. He was returning from a story in Newport Beach.

The car fire started at 10:37 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Cooke was able to safely exit the vehicle and call 911.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was unknown.

"Statement From NBC4 News Management Regarding News Van":

"Late this morning, an NBC4 news van caught on fire on the 405 Freeway just north of the Getty Center.  The driver, one of our photographers who was returning from a story in Newport Beach, was the only person in the vehicle and was unharmed.  The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. While we regularly inspect our vehicles, we are taking precautionary measures to examine our entire truck and van fleet to further ensure their safety.   We are grateful to the Fire Department who responded quickly to extinguish the fire.  We are also comforted that no one was hurt in the during the incident and will work closely with officials as they investigate the cause.  The cause of the fire is unknown."
