What's that cresting on that ridge over there? That chrome-like gleam shining in the not-too-far-off distance?
Why it's the Los Angeles Auto Show, a tremendous and tony gathering of car pros and the planet's most primo vehicles, including several straight-from-the-future gems that jump-start a thousand gotta-own-one daydreams upon their unveiling.
But for those autoists who love their chrome gleam and daydreams with a bit of patina (both real and symbolic), there is a fresh happening on the horizon, one that's devoted to the "rarest classic, historic and vintage cars in the world."
It's the Inaugural Classic Auto Show, a three-day convention "presented by Autogeek.com and powered by Velocity," and it rolls into the Los Angeles Convention Center from Friday, Jan. 27 through Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017.
"This tribute to the cars of bygone years" should find firm footing in Southern California, one of the robust centers of vintage automobile love. That passion is expressed in myriad ways, from Route 66 cruises to the venerable Glendale Cruise Night, one of the staples of summer 'round these parts.
Add to those events our excellent institutions — hello, Petersen Automotive Museum, The Nethercutt Collection, and all of you auto-obsessed destinations around SoCal — and you have an area that's custommade for some old-school vroom-vroom action on a larger scale.
The long-weekend happening will also include a swap meet, Q&As, and plenty of chances to get up-close with decades-old muscle cars and convertibles and other engine-powerful gems from another era.
